Having grown up in Tennessee, snow was infrequent and a holiday if it was six inches or more. Snow is much more common in Iowa, but still has a magical appeal to me as it covers the drab browns of fall and floats through the air like the freshness of white linens on a clothesline. Unlike the noise of rain, this precipitation brings a reverent silence.
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10 (ESV)

I love standing in the snow – it is so quiet, but those “wet” snows ….you can hear the soft “plop” of big flakes..

I enjoy that, too, Meg. Thanks for commenting!

I have never thought of snowing as bringing a ‘reverent silence’, but you’re right. I shall enjoy it all the more the next time it happens. Thank you.

Thank you, Vanessa! Scientifically, there is an absorption of sound waves in freshly fallen snow, but I prefer to see it as something holy as perhaps the Author of creation intended.

I wholeheartedly agree with your preference, particularly as Psalm 46:10 is one I’m often prompted to remember 🙂

I went to grad school in Iowa and snow was definitely an integral part of life there. 🙂 This picture captures the magic of winter so beautifully. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comment. Iowa has some unique beauty of its own…it’s not all corn fields. I enjoyed checking out you blog. It looks like you are clicking some beautiful sights in the Northeast now. Thanks for stopping by.

I appreciate it, Rene. We’ve not seen measurable snow this season. How about you?
