Weekly Photo Challenge: Circle

Flying over Kansas on Wednesday, I caught an optical phenomenon that I had never seen before: a glory. glory-Edit

From Wikipedia: The glory consists of one or more concentric, successively dimmer rings, each of which is red on the outside and bluish towards the center. The effect is believed to happen due to classical wave tunneling, when light nearby a droplet tunnels through air inside the droplet and, in the case of a glory, is emitted backwards due to resonance effects.

Though the “glory” effect may have a scientific basis, I believe that all creation bears the mark of THE Creator, thus helping us see glimpses of His glory.

11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory be above all the earth. Psalm 57:11 (NASB)

May your New Year be truly glorious!

    • I first thought is was just an embedded in my window but was able to see it though the window in the row ahead of me. As soon as we landed, I was able to Google it and discover what the phenomenon was. I’m not a frequent flyer, so I was happy to be able to see it. Glad you were able to capture it, too. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  2. Interesting! I’d never heard the scientific definition of a “glory”. I knew that most people thought only of a type of light phenomenon when reading or hearing “glory” in connection with the Bible, but not realizing it is connected with “the weight or value” of something, as when measuring the weight or value of precious metals or jewels.

    • A new perspective on glory for me, as well. The Colson Center has this posted: People experience the glory of God as a kind of weight. The original meaning of the word, “glory”, is “to be heavy” or “to weigh upon.” When we are in the presence of the glory of God and aware of it, we become conscious of something greater than ourselves pressing upon us, crowding and weighing on us, like a heavy spiritual presence. In Scripture, whenever God shows His glory to any of His servants, they fall down to the ground, as though knocked off their feet by the sudden realization of some great, weighty presence. When Jesus told the mob which had come to arrest Him in the garden that He was “I am,” they all tumbled over backward, so strong and weighty was the experience of being conscious of the glory of God. http://www.colsoncenter.org/the-center/columns/viewpoint/20387-threads-in-the-tapestry-of-truth-2
