The “rest of the story” is that these three swans had just been released by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as they try to restore trumpeter swan populations to Iowa. The Trumpeter Swan Restoration project released these three swans last May at Summit Lake near Creston, IA, and four more this year.

Thanks for stopping by, Barbara. It was such a fun event to photograph. The DNR gave a 30 minute educational presentation for school children (and adults) and then the released the swans. They were anxious to get in the water!

Thanks, Rene. They were almost comical, quickly getting away from the humans but stopping at the water’s edge and almost testing the water before going in.
