Weekly Photo Challenge: One Shot, Two Ways

For this challenge, capture two images — a horizontal and a vertical version — of the same scene or subject. There are no concrete “rules” here, but a) it should be evident that both shots are of the same place/location or person/thing, and b) your photographs should ideally have been taken during the same shoot. – by Cheri Lucas Rowlands on August 9, 2013.

The first pictures were taken as I was traveling near my home in Iowa last Spring. The blur of wild blue phlox in my peripheral view caused me to turn around for a few photos. But the rusting gate and topless grain silo in the background captured my interest, wondering how many times that silo had been filled with corn, or imaging a farmer’s child jumping off the tractor to open the gate for his father as he brought in a full grain wagon from the harvest.

The next shots are of the garden angel and petunias growing there. The angel was given to my wife as a memorial at the time of her mother’s death. She loves her perennial garden with a splash of annual colors and the comfort of her mother’s memory in its midst.

Beautiful images. I love the bright splash of violet – such a transcendent, spiritual colour – against the loveliness of the angel. Alienora

I like your photos here. It’s like I can see your mind working as you frame the shot then consider what attracted to you to take the photo in the first place. I really like the second shot of the silo.

I like both sets. The colors in the second are wonderful and I like the way you framed the first picture and changed the focus in the second.

Yes, vantage point makes a difference…short vs long range, ground vs overhead, and portrait vs landscape. Looking over my archives, I found few portrait shots…will have to begin taking more. Thanks for the visit and kind words!

Thanks! Enjoyed your “Storing Up Happy Moments” post. We will be vacationing at the beach in the near future…our favorite place. We, also, enjoy the sunset time since we have a view of the sun setting over the water. The entire extended family stops what they are doing to gather for that spectacular sight and the question, “Did you see the green flash” as the last sliver of sun sinks over the horizon. While the mountains give us a glimpse of God’s majesty, the ocean speaks to me of His unending/eternal nature.

Great photos. It is amazing how different the different view of the same shot are.. I love the close up of the lock and gate and the close up o the petunia.. maybe I am a detail person.

Thank you, Lily. I am a detail person, too, but I’m sorry to say that It wasn’t until I was printing the gate picture for our county fair photo competition that I noticed the blue on the lock. Now it’s my favorite aspect of the photo that full of green and rust.

I’ve found myself taking a number of pictures this summer as I drive across rural Iowa because of the beautiful clouds. Your one shot was not just two ways but three with the window’s reflection…very creative shot.
